August Newsletter Highlights: Welcome Center Moves Back To Original Location

The Welcome Center is once again located just outside the release gate of the Northwest ICE Processing Center (NWIPC).  The move will make it easier for people who are released to access services, and for volunteers to contact anyone waiting for a release and to offer them a place to wait. NWIPC officials approved the move, and a permit was obtained from the City of Tacoma.

On Saturday, August 9, volunteers led by Operations Manager Aidan Perkinson and Board Member Mary Carstensen disassembled the back tent, carried the front tent down to the new site, erected a new back tent, and moved the RV to its new spot.

From The July Community Meeting – Great Tips for Conversations About Immigrants and How to Combat Misinformation

Our July 16th AIDNW Community Meeting brought us four experts in communication from different arenas: higher education, the faith community, the non-profit sector, and instructional design.

After a set of planned questions, asking how we can all navigate the sea of misinformation and dangerous rhetoric against immigrants in our current political climate, the event opened up to the audience (and remote/Zoom attendees) for additional questions and answers.

We deeply appreciate the panelists who took time out of their schedules to share their insights and best practices with all who attended, eager to learn and enhance our communication on this important yet sensitive topic during this divisive time.

The panelists were Dr. Joyce del Rosario, Executive Director of Faith Action Network; Marisa Petrich, Instructional Design Librarian, UW Tacoma; Dr. Tomas Ramos, Professor of Communication at Tacoma Community College; Nic Nelson, St. Mark’s Global and Refugee Alliance. AIDNW Operations Manager Aidan Perkinson facilitated the discussion.
